On June 18, 2015, the U.S. Department of Labor announced it will award $138 million to 27 states and the Cherokee tribal nation to strengthen, expand innovative job training and reemployment strategies for laid-off workers. According to the Alaska Workforce Investment Board, Alaska will receive nearly $3 million of this funding to support a two-year effort to reemploy dislocated workers, with a focus on the healthcare, construction, and maritime industries. The grant will also support AWIB’s regional economic and workforce planning.
